«Tiny Big World – Verkäuferlilädeli and Miniatures from West and East»

At the beginning of the nineteenth century, a specialized toy industry developed around Nuremberg, which was mainly concerned with the construction and distribution of children’s toy stores. Pharmacies, spices stores and colonial stores were just as much part of the offer as butcher’s shops or drugstores. The collector Frieda Wick-Willi (1952 – 2016) from Teufen AR has purchased and restored over a hundred of this “toy stores”. In the exhibition season 2017/2018, the Haus Appenzell shows eighty shops from her collection.

The “Hairy Monkeys” or “Maohou” from China – small figures, which are made of magnolia buds and the heads and legs of swamp cicadas – get arranged to everyday scenes of traditional Chinese life. In the exhibition which opens at the 6th of October 2017, the Haus Appenzell shows a selection of over forty contemporary miniatures with “Hairy Monkeys”.
