Since its announcement six years ago, the Belt-and-Road Initiative (BRI) has become a central pillar of China’s foreign policy strategy. The infrastructure and investment projects launched as part of the initiative offer participating states in Eurasia and Europe new opportunities for development and connectivity. The BRI has the potential to fundamentally change the political geography in China’s neighborhood and beyond. Like its European neighbors, Switzerland faces the challenge to develop an approach that balances its economic interests and security concerns as they relate to China’s growing influence.
