LONDON 2020 Chinese New Year Festival

photos and text by Mike Federer

Apparently the biggest New Year festivities outside of China. All roads around Chinatown are closed to accommodate the crowds.

Every restaurant and shop hang out cabbage with a red envelope (cash inside) attached. The dragon dances in front of the building, stands up and grabs the cabbage. He shreds it apart and throws cabbage back into the house. The employees try to catch it. It symbolizes money that should come to the restaurant in the new year.

The lion gets the cabbage:

Every year on Trafalgar Square there is a large stage showing music, dance and martial arts performances.

And of course, there are many stands selling rats and banners in any shape and size, but only in red! 新年快乐!
