The Great Chinese New Year’s Concert at KKL Lucerne

“The Great Chinese New Year’s Concert” looks back on more than 150 guest performances on 3 continents in over 70 concert halls. Each year a different orchestra is invited to perform. The annual election of the orchestra by an expert board guarantees the transmission of the great variety of Chinese music.

2020, on the occasion of the year of the rat, the audience can enjoy the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra. Since its foundation in 1977, the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra has been awarded the titles “Guide to Traditional Chinese Music” and “Cultural Ambassador of Hong Kong”. It is regularly invited to perform in famous venues and festivals around the world – in Europe, North America, Asia, Australia and the Arctic Circle. On the international stage today it is considered to be one of the leading Chinese music ensembles. The orchestra consists of over 91 professional musicians, divided into four groups: String instruments, plucked instruments, wind instruments and percussion. Among the instruments used are both the traditional and the more advanced modern varieties.

The orchestra has also received many other awards and recognitions for its achievements in the fields of art, governance and administration, art education, marketing and advertising. The Eco-Huqin series developed by the orchestra was not only awarded the 4th Innovation Prize of the Ministry of Culture in 2012 but was also honoured by many other institutions for its sustainable and innovative concept. It complements the remarkable and highly commendable list of successes in the history of the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra.
