As part of the punk exhibition at Zurich’s Photobastei, the artist Martina Strul presents her photographs of the Chinese punk scene. CHINARCHY is a flashback to the Chinese underground of the years 2004-2008. The focus is on punks who completely refuse the ruthless gold-rush in their own country.
The photos were taken after Martina fell head over heels in love with Superman, a Chinese punk, on her first trip to China in 2004. In her photo book SHANGHIGH – LOVE HATE PUNK Martina Strul reveals her personal view of this love story. In word and picture she shows the development of an impossible love that had no chance of survival in the midst of mutual misunderstanding and an insurmountable hopelessness. With the exhibition CHINARCHY in the Photobastei, Martina Strul takes the viewer beyond Shanghai’s borders on an adventurous journey through the Chinese underground in Beijing, Nanjing and Wuhan.
