Yan Ruyi – Zurich Chinese Food Tour

What comes to our mind when we think of Chinese Cuisine? Sweet and sour pork? Peking duck? Beef Satay? Although these dishes are super delicious, they do not define Chinese cuisine.

I have been looking for authentic Chinese restaurants in Zurich for more than two years now and there are a few places I would definitely recommend. So, please follow me on this culinary adventure around Zurich!

Restaurant Yan Ruyi (如意轩)

Not so far away from the lake of Zurich, this restaurant offers a very relaxing dining environment with its friendly staff. Not only will you find some of the most famous Chinese dishes in the West but also really authentic dishes like steamed fish or pork tripe. Mouthwatering for experienced Chinese diners!

This dish, the so-called 清蒸鲈鱼 (steamed sea bass) was one of my favourites. The sea bass was fresh and the used ingredients were just perfect. The white fluffy meat dipped in some light salty soy sauce…Mmmh definitely worth the experience.

The infamous pork tripes! Well, I am fully aware that Swiss people may have a problem with eating intestines in general but today’s blog post is about authentic Chinese cuisine. The dish has a unique fresh taste since it’s prepared like a salad. But the crunchiness of the tripes mixed with the sour spicy sauce inflames a firework of flavours in your mouth.

For those guys who love their dish to be spicy (and I mean here SPICY, not the „western“ spicy), this is the one to strive for. But please enjoy it with caution, because it‘s spicy and only spicy!

Well, I am not a guy that eats dessert, but I think the pumpkin cookies are worth mentioning. Freshly made by the owner and the flavour of my childhood…

These are some of the dishes one does not usually find in Switzerland. It has been a very nostalgic experience because I didn‘t expect the food to be this good. Not only did the food satisfy me, the restaurant’s decoration also caught my attention.

Either as a normal customer or as someone that is supposed to give a feedback on a dining experience, this restaurant is definitely a place for me to come back to. A big foody as I am, I have very high expectations of food, especially concerning Chinese cuisine. But Yanruyi definitely convinced me with its cooking. The family-run restaurant values the customer’s needs and prepares the food with care. Surely there are things that need to be improved in order to provide a first-class dining experience, but I don‘t doubt their dedication to achieve that.

I will be exploring Zurich for more interesting places to eat! So please keep on track with me and see you guys soon!
