The Chinese writer and filmmaker Xiaolu Guo has had an eventful life. It started with being given away to a peasant family as a baby, while her father was in labour camp and her mother working day and night. At the age of two, she was passed on to her illiterate grandparents: an abusive grandfather and a helpless though loving grandmother.
In her autobiography Once Upon a Time in the East, the writer describes her childhood and her passage from her grandparents’ village to a town, then to Beijing and finally to London where she is living now. The author will read from her book and show pictures and films to accompany her text. The event will be held in English.
