The mass media in the religions of Ancient China @ Confucius Institute at the University of Basel

The mass media in the religions of Ancient China @ Confucius Institute at the University of Basel | Basel | Basel-Stadt | Switzerland

The topic of “media and religion” is still a particularly explosive subject today. The medium, which in modern usage of the word “intermediary” (lat. medius,”the middle”), becomes in the modern mass media a mere (water) carrier of information and opinions. For the transfer of religious contents, for which the respective religions assert a special claim to truth, the medium cannot be arbitrary. In most cultures, the history of the media is therefore closely linked to the history of the transfer of religious content. In addition to the distribution of the Scriptures, the Christian pictorial panels, the Christian sculptures and even the Christian cathedrals, which could be understood and read as an exemplary media programme for the presentation and distribution of Christian contents, are eye-catching for us in the West. In the lecture – in a streamlined passage through one and a half millennia of Chinese cultural history – the most important media will be presented, by means of which religious contents were conveyed in different contexts. In order to get an overview of the respective “fall height” between content and medium, the contents themselves as well as the medium as such, we have addressed the following questions to the traditional sources: Who communicates with whom? What is communicated? Which medium is used to communicate?

Lecture held by Prof. Dr. Stephan Peter Bumbacher.
